When we get busy, we start to take shortcuts and deprioritize things we shouldn’t. It’s hard to manage the stress of work-life balance. We often don’t eat right, consume enough water, or get enough exercise, and we let other things go too. Before long, our health is declining, and we’re wondering what went wrong. 1. Set your alarm five to 10 minutes earlier.

Five to 10 minutes might not seem like much, but it can make a world of difference in helping your day get off to a better start. Rather than hitting the snooze, wake up just a bit earlier then get out of bed when that alarm goes off. As long as you are going to bed at a reasonable hour and you are getting seven to nine hours of sleep per night, you won’t miss that five to ten minutes.

2. Put those five to ten minutes to good use and get some exercise.

Head straight to the gym, whether it be somewhere at home where you can sneak in some exercise or your local club. Doctors recommend that adults get 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week. With ten extra minutes each day, that’s 70 minutes right there. So take that extra time and put it to good use, starting your day with a healthy dose of cardiovascular activity or some weight-lifting.

3. Invest in a work-friendly treadmill.

If getting to the gym isn’t going to work for you, then consider investing in a walking work-friendly treadmill. Instead of sitting at your desk for that next conference call, hop on the treadmill and walk. There are several excellent treadmills on the market that are perfect for those who want to get in some steps during the workday. 4. Add counter push-ups to your daily routine.

If you’re still not getting in the amount of exercise you should with your extra time in the morning or that new work-friendly treadmill, or if you are still in need of some weight-bearing exercises, consider counter push-ups. Push-ups are excellent for building strength in your upper body and strengthening your lower back and core. Next time you are in the kitchen, sneak in 10 to 20 counter push-ups to help build some arm muscle and strength. Do it every day and watch how your arms change over time!

5. Grab a piece of fruit instead of a bag of chips.

This is easier said than done, especially if you have salty snacks stashed throughout your pantry and kitchen. We cannot deny that potato and nacho chips are tasty, but unfortunately, they’re not a healthy snack. Chips contain a high sodium content that can negatively affect your cardiovascular system. When we consume too much salt, we’re at greater risk of high blood pressure, leading to heart failure, heart disease, kidney disease, or stroke. Ensure that your refrigerator has fruits and veggies at the ready, and grab those items the next time you are feeling a pang of hunger between meals. Your body will thank you for it.

6. Pack an extra toothbrush and some floss in your purse or stash them in your desk.

We know that busy professionals can struggle to find the time to brush and floss their teeth. And since the best time to brush is right after meals, it might not be that convenient if you’re not working from home. So, make sure you have an extra toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss with you, whether in your desk, purse, or glove compartment. When you head to the restroom to wash up, sneak in some oral hygiene. If carrying a toothbrush with you isn’t feasible, at least have some floss handy.

The best health hack is prevention.

We know it can be time-consuming to get to the dentist even twice a year. But oral prevention and preventive health care is the best health hack and time-saver there is.
